xAI
Systems, Tools & SafetyThe AI company founded by Elon Musk that develops Grok and the Colossus training supercomputer.
xAI is building both the driver and the racetrack: Grok is the visible product, while Colossus supplies the training ground underneath it.
xAI is an artificial intelligence company founded in 2023 by Elon Musk and Christian Szegedy. It develops Grok, a conversational model distributed through X and designed around access to current information, along with the infrastructure needed to train and serve it. The company’s public identity combines frontier model development with a deliberately irreverent product voice.
Grok-1 launched on X in 2023, followed by open weights, vision and image-generation work, Grok-3 in 2025, and Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy later that year. The model line has moved from a chatbot embedded in a social platform toward a family of systems intended for reasoning, coding, and multi-agent tasks.
The other half of xAI’s strategy is Colossus, its large training cluster in Memphis. The company expanded the site from its initial GPU deployment to a much larger multi-building operation, making compute capacity part of the product story rather than an invisible supplier.
SpaceX acquired xAI in 2026, placing the model company inside a broader aerospace and infrastructure group. That structure gives xAI access to capital, hardware, and distribution, while concentrating its product, data, and governance decisions in one corporate ecosystem.
